What is Euphoria Lane?

Euphoria Lane is an additional street that branches off of Diagon Alley. It serves as both a street for shoppes and businesses, as well as a location for prime real-estate for the city-savvy witch or wizard. It is the main setting for this post-Hogwarts, post-war game. The game is based in the year of 2003 2004, in London, England and, more specifically, around Euphoria Lane and its residents. The game focuses on character development and individual stories, rather than on an overall world-plot, as we know from experience how hard it is to maintain a post-Hogwarts game active and provide interaction opportunities in such an ample setting as... the world.

By reducing our universe to the residents of Euphoria Lane and providing the players with writing exercises and diverse challenges, the moderators intend to create an active and laid back community, in which all the participating characters will feel included and be offered opportunities of interaction, developing solid relationships - be it of romance, friendship or rivalry.

During the war, the street's shoppes took a major blow to income, much like the rest of Diagon Alley, but it was still frequently used during the day. Setting itself up for a 6 o'clock curfew during times of war, many of the residents on Euphoria Lane stuck around through the worst of the war, but it's safe to say that just as many went into hiding, leaving behind their city flats. Today, Euphoria Lane is a hub for numerous tastes and is rarely with out a crowd.

When is the game set?

The game is set in real time, in the year of 2003 2004. This means that days and months are the same in real life, as they are in the game. Tuesday, January 16, 2008 = Tuesday, January 16, 2004. Easy enough.

What is our plot?

[info]euphorialane is an experimental game, which will focus mainly on interpersonal interactions and monthly character development exercises. Even though individual plots will be expected, the moderators will offer weekly game-oriented events for characters to take part in. Players are expected to participate appropriately in order to make the game work. Even though we have cleared the Wizarding World of the ever-tasking war plot, this does not in any way mean that there will be a single dull moment in game, as the moderators will make sure of.

How are we different from other games?

The difference between Euphoria Lane and other Harry Potter games is in the sense that, instead of creating a world-wide game environment, we have decided to limit our scope, in order to focus on the interactions between the characters, offering a viable reason to form relationships and interpersonal plots, strengthening the bonds that connect the characters and making it easier to role-play scenes and events. We will focus on character development and individual plots, so this is the place you want if what you are looking for is somewhere you can write and have fun with talented and easy-going characters and players.

Are you Deathly Hallows compliant?

No, Euphoria Lane is canon until Half Blood Prince. The game started out six months before Deathly Hallows was released, and our war was drawn out for three years longer than canon. For this reason, as well as several other game canon-related issues, we have decided not to pursue canon to its fullest extent. All players are given free reign to incorporate the new information into their characters as they see fit. For more information on Euphoria Lane's war, see below.

What happened during the war?

Following Half-Blood Prince, the Trio set out on the journey of the Horcruxes while the Wizarding World trembled in fear of You-Know-Who. Numerous people were reported missing daily, murders were frequently gracing the headlines of the Daily Prophet and, naturally, the masses were progressing into a panic. While some chose to go into hiding, others decided to join the fight against He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named and his Death Eaters. The Ministry encouraged the youth of the Wizarding World to join the fight by way of patriotic duty, while the Dark Lord made a point to blackmail, threaten, and Imperius his numerous followers.

The fight for the Wizarding World increased greatly the fall of 1998, when members of the werewolf community volunteered to work with the Ministry against those like them who were gathering forces with You-Know-Who. Though there were never full-on Death Eater attacks in London, the missing numbers count increased daily. During this time, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley searched the country-side, with the aid of Remus Lupin, and other trustworthy Order members, hoping to locate the remaining horcruxes.

On November 17, 2000, the Dark Lord and The-Boy-Who-Lived faced off once again at Godric's Hollow. This time, the boy proved himself worthy of his long-time opponent and, with the help of his friends, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, Harry Potter was once again involved in the dramatic downfall of Lord Voldemort. Already on the following morning, the rumour mills of the wizarding world churning ecstatically.

Though there was still a band of Death Eaters eager to continue with their fallen leader's plan, they were quickly flushed out by Ministry forces and ushered into proper custody. Some managed to escape a life-term sentence at Azkaban by offering names of others like them. Others greased the palms of the still-present crooked politicians within the Wizengamot. Because of the secret society structure the Death Eaters were involved with, it was difficult to truly convict everyone who had participated in the war. Those that were convicted, however, were made examples of. Their titles, properties, and money were stripped from them on grounds of treason. Those traitors who survived the relocation process to Azkaban will sit in their cells for many years to come.

Where's the trio now?

Still in 2003 2004, the Trio continues to be hero-worshiped by the wizarding media. With the second fall of Voldemort, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley rose to fame virtually over night. Known as the "Fantastic Trio" by tabloids they're typical wizarding celebrities these days. They're frequently invited to high-end events, Quidditch matches, charities, and other such press junkets. Books have been written about their rumoured exploits, and the Prophet Gossip articles reek of their most recent private lives.

Unfortunately, the trio is still on a mission to find that last horcrux before someone else does. Though this information is generally unknown by the public, it is a notable plot point that could prove experimentally juicy should we choose to plow forward with it.

How has the Wizarding World recovered?

Though the economy struggled and society took some time to readjust, the Wizarding World has just begun to regain their footing. The aftermath of the war still plagues some individuals who were involved more than others, but in the end they can assure themselves that there's a future ahead.

The favoured Minister of Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, has put forth 2003 New Years Resolutions to tickle even the most bitter of voting polls. He's looking to lower taxes, increase magical production, and continue to make positive changes to the Ministry for many years to come.

Why can't I apply for a girl?

Our ratio of male to female characters is WAY out of balance. Because of this, we are putting a temporary cap on the female characters. All female characters are welcome to apply, but none of the applications will be looked at until we have removed this temporary cap. There is a way around it, however, and we do realize that it's a little bit like a bribe: apply for a male character, and by the time you can apply for your second character, the cap will probably have been lifted. BUTWEDIDN'TTELLYOUTHIS!

Can my character be involved with another character before I join?

As long as you've already got a player who's applying with you, that's fine. Unfortunately, we will not be letting players claim (current) pairings without an already compliant partner. Players looking to apply with characters who have predetermined spouses/lovers/flat mates/etc, but do not have role-play partners, should direct themselves to our game classifieds.

What if I don't want to apply as a bulk group, but my character wants flatmates?

That's entirely fine too! You don't have to apply as part of a bulk group to get flatmates. Keep in mind, however, that your character will have to pursue "flatmates" as a character-driven plot direction. You'll be able to get in the game, but in order to obtain your desired flatmates, your character will have to hold appropriate interviews with prospective options and decide where to go. In translation, that means you'll have to post in [info]euphoriafieds asking for someone to apply for an individual who'd eventually answer that advert in the Daily Prophet. Most things are allowed, as long as they are plotted within the game.

Will my character's war involvement affect me now?

Yes. We'd like all players to assume that the war was a very traumatizing experience for everyone - even those who were neutral to the causes. Those who did take a stand by choosing an official affiliation are expected to show the appropriate grieving/mourning/recovering processes still in place three years following the event.

Can I play a member of the trio?

We currently have a full trio set, but you are more than free to apply to any other open character!

Can I say my character joined the Order/DE's during the war?

Yes, so long as it would have been believable via book canon. Though interpretation is up for debate, we - under no circumstances- encourage OrderMember!Draco or DeathEater!McGonagall! Minor characters can go either way, so long as their individual back-story makes sense for it.

What should I assume the post-Hogwarts workforce to be like?

During the war, you can expect a great deal of Ministry encouragement for the youth of the Wizarding World to "serve their country." There was great pressure for recent Hogwarts alumni of 1997-2000, to get involved with numerous Ministry training programs ranging from Aurors and Hitwizards to Med-wizards and Healers. It is likely that anything Ministry related had a special training program throughout the war. Young witches and wizards between the ages of 17 & 24 were usually coaxed into signing up for training in one of the programs before they even finished their Hogwarts education. It's safe to assume that a number of eager, of-age 6th years were talked into "joining the cause", before they even started their 2nd year N.E.W.T. levels.

If you choose to not pursue available Ministry programs, feel free to assume that 7th years are frequently approached by individuals looking for apprentices. It's likely that Hogwarts professors have a great deal of connections in the outside world and would be more than willing to recommend their star pupils to job opportunities.

Now, with the war over, the recruitment process has died down, but the programs are still present. By now, characters should be establishing themselves in some sort of field. Those who are still "dabbling", might not have as many eager hands reaching out for them to take apprenticeships and other such positions, but they still have options. The key to it is to take initiative and find those opportunities.

Also see War Programme.

Can I make my character gay or bisexual?

We're currently have a good number of gay and bisexual characters. You can apply for a gay or bisexual character, but please realize that we'll be reading your application very closely! We don't do slash for the sake of slash, so your character will have to have other juicy stuff to work through besides just his or her homosexuality. Just be realistic, is all we ask.

I feel as though I have no plot! What do I do?

CONTACT A MOD! We're generally very friendly and are more than willing to help you out with plots! Be prepared to answer the very hard question: "What do you want to do?"

What is the Mod Post?

At the beginning of each month, there is a post made to the OOC community that contains an activity check/role call along with the game event calendar, notes concerning the game, and Friendly Reminders we all need and love. This was the way the mods found to ensure that the players have freedom to take direction with their characters, but with background events to back the plots up and make interaction easier.

This post signifies that the mods are present in game, but we are here to make life easier for anyone, and not get in the way. It is advisable that all players read through this post at least once, so they are aware of what will be happening during the month.

What are monthly game activities?

Once a player is added to the game these events are accessible in the [info]supplements journal. Game activities are events that are happening in our game locally, nationally, and internationally. Players will be aware of monthly activities going on in the Wizarding World, so that they can reference to them in journals, threads, and plots. These activities will help moderators keep track of Daily Prophet articles, and necessary events throughout the month. Activities are a gaming tool that will ideally keep players informed of what is going on around the world, so that everyone and their characters are informed.

Game activities will also be posted in the Mod Post in the beginning of each month. These activities will be "public domain", meaning that characters will have the opportunity to participate/talk about/complain of these activities as they see fit.
Examples:
Local - February 12 - Grand Opening of A Million & One Ice-cream Parlour. Free ice cream cones (one per customer) will be distributed throughout the day to all new customers.

National - February 15 - Holyhead Harpies vs. Puddlemere United. The final game outcome will be Holyhead 560 United 675. There will be a riot between Harpies and United fans following the catch of the snitch that'll require hired hit-wizards to interfere.

International - February 25 - The Chinese Ministry announced today that they'll be mapping out a 3 day broom race across their country and encourage the best broom racers of the world to take part.

By posting these minor plot events in one entry, we will be able to generate a consistent Daily Prophet. Plus, even if the mods don't get around to posting a prophet for that day, players will be able to take what information is given to them during the Mod Post and make proper use of it.

What are Prophet Quickies?

Quickies won't be full out prophet articles, but they'll consist of a Headline and a brief description for players to refer to in their interactions. It is likely that these quickies will include amusing tidbits and celebrity gossip as the game progresses.

Where do I post stuff?

[info]euphorialane - Main community - Post all IC threads/logs/owls/etc here.

[info]euphoriaooc - OOC community - post all ooc hellos/goodbyes/hiatus notes/randomness here.

[info]euphoriafieds - Classifieds community - Helps us with prospective players, plot, and characters.

How do you prefer role-play in the communities?

All threads/logs should be written in third-person. All journals should be written in first-person. When threading we advise that you write at least two paragraphs per reply (one reflective paragraph, one action paragraph). If you choose to write short replies (100 words per post), we advise you log all of your third person interactions on AIM, e-mail or PMs, before posting them on the community as a single body of text. Logs should not contain screen/character names and should read like a story - not a script. You should also supply necessary Who, When, Setting, Rating at the beginning of each thread and/or log. NC-17 posts must be friends locked and behind a cut.

Do you have special journal backstory?

Nope, no one fancy created them here. We're assuming that journals are an every-day communication tool that has been around since the 60's. Though the technology enchantments have certainly improved since their original start, these journals aren't a new fad or an obsession. It's likely that your character had one during school, and it's also likely that they've been using the journal system for a while now. It all depends on your character's interest in magical communication. Journals can be purchased in any bookstore and they come from various publishing houses. Some include extra features (colour changing binding, enchanted notifications, animated personalities, etc), some are just regular old books that wouldn't be given a second look on a book shelf.

Additionally, keep in mind that strikeouts are unreadable and show up as ink splotches. Names of journal "owners" are automatically printed next to each journal entry and comment made (however not the icons). It's entirely possible to have journals stolen and being used by someone not the "registered" user. When this occurs characters are advised to contact book manufacturers who'll deal with the problem as necessary. Also, please refrain from emoticons and netslang, as these would not be present on paper.

A note about OOC notes in IC places.

Don't do them. It doesn't matter if it's in small font between brackets or on an LJ cut warning about pictures or content. They don't belong there. Unless your post is a large picture post, and you're basically saying "Pictures" or "conserve space", don't do it. It detaches from the game and the flow to see random OOC notes all over IC posts. If you need to get ahold of someone, IM them, e-mail them, PM, or use the OOC board. It's why it's there after all. And if you want to credit sources for images you're using in a post, please put it either in your user info or wherever you've put your character's user info. Put it under a disclaimer and link to the entry or just put a note that some content from This or That place. Whatever tickles your fancy. Just don't go putting them in the entries themselves or the main community. OOC, after all, belongs Out of Character.

Where are your rules?!

We only have one. GASPSHOCKOMG. Yes, sorry. We have an activity rule! Please post for all your characters at least once every two weeks. We also assume our players will have a brain and enough common sense to follow role-play etiquette. If you don't know what that is, well, chances are you won't fit in here.

Common sense is also needed. Use the trust we invest in your wisely.

How many characters can I play?

You can play up to 6 characters. After obtaining your first character, you’ll have to wait an additional 2 weeks before applying for a second. Players will be required to actively play their 1st and 2nd characters for 1 month, before applying for a third character. Add an additional month of playing all three of those characters, then you'll be able to apply for a 4th, and so on. Mods have the right to decline applications based on prior activity/progression levels with other characters. To obtain your 5th and 6th characters, you must be active with the other four. We reserve the right to turn down 5th and 6th characters based on activity.

What are your activity rules?

We understand that sometimes players are unable to follow an intensive activity quota, so we're not going to have any set activity rules. It's advised that players post at least once a week, however, we won't push the subject like a bunch of whip-swinging slave drivers. Players are expected to be responsible for their own activity.

Why was I removed from the game?

Just because we don't have a set activity rule, it doesn't mean we won't take notice of your inactive bum. Every first of the month, we post a "role call" for all players who wish to stay within the community. You'll have 7 days to reply to the post, if you don't reply, you will be removed from the game without notice. As much as we would love for you to stay with us, we won't be holding your hand and giving you warnings. Clearly, if you don't log in at least once every seven days, you're not actively involved enough to stay around.

Do I have to have AIM?

No, but it is highly advisable that you do. A number of GJ role-players use aim as a way to interact and game chats will occur frequently on AIM. If you choose to not use AIM, be sure to supply alternative messaging programs or e-mail addresses, so that other players can get a hold of you.

Do you accept OC's (original characters)?

Nope. There are numerous names mentioned in the Potterverse with little to no backstory. OC's at this time will not be accepted.

Why don't you have a normal character list?

Because we enjoy being difficult, there, happy? No, seriously though, as discussed on the character page, we have our own reasons for listing character types, as opposed to just names and houses. Because we're post-warts and more or less a "social" game, the list we use will hopefully encourage diversity within our cast.

Why'd you reject my PB?

Because we didn't like it. Yes, I know, it's not fair! But, that's life. Though we're usually lenient where PB's are concerned, and we haven't wasted space with a never-ending "Banned list", we still hold the right to decline PB's. We'll be more than willing to make suggestions, but keep in mind that the typical banned (Hilton's, Lohan, Olsen, High School musical, etc) are generally frowned upon here as well. Though we're not a strict "rare face" game, and are more than happy to let you play popular PB's, the PB has to be able to convince us that he could be your jerky Slytherin, or she could be your bubbly Hufflepuff. If we can't look at them and buy it... chances are we'll ask you to change. Hint: chances are: if your PB is a main character in another fandom (Buffy, Heroes, Veronica Mars, Star Wars, etc), the odds are that you'll be asked to change since it's usually hard to disassociate from the fandom they belong to.

I've been accepted! What now?

Here at Euphoria Lane, we have a trial acceptance period that all new characters go through. Basically, this trial acceptance ensures that we have a three week period to make sure that the mods and the players agree that your character is a good fit for the game. Sometimes characters come out differently then the application made them out to be. Sometimes characters just aren't quite fitting in as they should. If within that three week period the mods and players decide that your character isn't working out, you will be contacted to either make the appropriate changes or apply for a new character.

My question isn't here, what do I do?

Well, now it's just about time to PANIC! Joking! Just leave a comment here with your question or e-mail the mods at euphoria.lane@gmail.com and we'll be certain to get back to you A.S.A.P.
